Behold, Pennsylvania mania!

The written history of Pennsylvania begins in 1681, when William Penn received a royal charter from King Charles II of England. (Of course, that’s not when Pennsylvania’s unwritten history begins, since the area was inhabited by the Lenape, Susquehannock, Iroquois, Erie, Shawnee, Arandiqiouia, and other Indigenous Americans before then.)

While some might say the best part of Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh, due to the presence of Sporcle Live shows at Elwood’s Pub and Sharp Edge Bistro, if William Penn were alive, he might argue that Philadelphia is better. Back in the day, Penn and his friends grew Philly into a major colonial city, and it was the site of the First and Second Continental Congresses. Philadelphia was even chosen as the temporary capital of the United States! Although abandoned in the early 19th century by the federal government, Philadelphia still remained a cultural center to the country.

After the Civil War, Philadelphia became one of the first US industrial centers and contained a variety of industries, the largest being textiles. A corrupt city government led to population decline, poor infrastructure, and mafia warfare. Revitalization of certain neighborhoods started in the late 19th and 20th century, and the early 21st century has seen an improved city image and bustling culture.

Amongst this contrast of decline and boom, Paddy’s Pub is one of the most well-known fictional venues in south Philadelphia (although Sporcle Live doesn’t yet have a show there!). Home to “The Gang,” a group of debauched, self-centered friends, it’s at the center of the show It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. This monologue captures the essence of The Gang’s modus operandi: “We immediately escalate everything to a ten… somebody comes in with some preposterous plan or idea, then all of a sudden everyone’s on the gas, nobody’s on the brakes, nobody’s thinking, everyone’s just talking over each other with one idiotic idea after another!”

If you think you know everything there is to know about the elaborate schemes of the characters we all love to hate — Dennis, Dee, Charlie, Mac, and Frank, and whomever they’ve roped in this time — you won’t want to miss Sporcle Live’s next theme night!
