The holidays of our lives!

There are random and quirky national days almost every day of the year. We’re sure you’ve heard of them – likely from your Facebook News Feed or on the rush hour traffic radio. In September, there’s Talk Like a Pirate Day; in July, we have World UFO Day, Cousins Day, and Lasagna Day; in December, you can celebrate Day of the Ninja, Pretend To Be A Time Traveler Day, or Sangria Day.

Today is International Panic Day! Not to be confused with International Picnic Day, which is also today. We’re not sure what is so common, and so substantial, to create an international incident of this magnitude, and yet, here it is on the calendar… are you overworked, underpaid, have kids who won’t stop screaming, or generally overstretched?  Today’s your chance to go gonzo on whatever it is that causes you stress. Or, perhaps a more prudent idea, today’s your day to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of daily life, relax at your local Sporcle Live show, and treat yourself to a chocolate chip cookie.  It’s also National Splurge Day, so you don’t have to feel guilty about spending extra for the steak, or saying yes to dessert.

Where do these days, weeks, months come from? Are they official, and if so, by whose authority? Can we declare whatever national day we want to see happen? Who’s in charge here and why did they approve Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day??
Turns out, a company or individual can just declare it. Anyone can make up a national day, and there’s no accreditation process or government agency involved.  Congress actually stopped passing legislation for special days awhile back, but today mayors, cities, towns, and states can declare their own. Websites like nationaldaycalendar.com and nationalwhateverday.com get tens of thousands of submissions, which they cull and curate to represent days everyone can celebrate. However, most of these national days pick up speed via social media. Panic! at the Disco member Brendon Urie got 15,000 likes when he tweeted a picture of him in boxers with the tag #nationalunderwearday. The very official National Park Service participates in National Trails Day despite it being unofficial. President Barack Obama tweeted “Arr you in?” on Sept. 19, 2012, for International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and got over 3,000 retweets.

This has got us thinking… should we declare a National Sporcle Live Day?
